Cat Trees for Apartments: What to Consider

Before we get to my top five favorite cat trees for apartments, let’s very quickly go over a few things to consider.

Cat trees are probably the most expensive item you’ll buy for kitty, so you want to make the most educated buying decision possible.

1. How much space do you really have?

First things first, break out the measuring tape and figure out how much space you really have.

Measure a few different potential places for the tree.

Make sure you’re measuring to find the max width, depth, and height that you can accommodate.

Keep in mind that a 24″ base doesn’t mean a tree will fit in a 2-foot spot.

My cat tree has a 2-foot base yet takes up more like 3 feet of overall space because some levels stick out more.

2. Where do you plan to put it?

Once you’ve done a few measurements around your apartment, decide on the best place to put your cat tree.

Don’t just think in terms of floor space! Look up, down, and all around!

Cat trees don’t have to take up floor space, so consider your walls and even the back of a door, too.

3. What does your lease say?

While wall-mounted cat trees are probably the best option for very small spaces, you’ll want to check your lease first.

Some landlords are fine with you putting holes in the wall as long as you patch them up before you move out.

Others, though, may only allow small nails to hang pictures, nothing larger than a thumbtack, or no holes at all.

4. What features are most important to you?

While features matter with any cat tree, when you’re buying one for a small apartment you really need to hone in on what matters most to you.

For example:

  • Do you want something that really gives your cat a workout with plenty of levels to climb?
  • Do you just want something that will get them to stop scratching your furniture?
  • Does it need to have a good cubby hole for napping?
  • Does it need all of the above?

While it is possible to find a small cat tree with all of the above, if you’re super short on space you’ll need to prioritize!

5. How much are you willing to spend?

Last (but far from least): how much can you reasonably afford to spend on a cat tree.

I’m not going to lie, some of the options below are expensive (especially the wall-mounted options).

It helps to know what I looked at when choosing the best cat trees for apartments.

  • Will they look good in your apartment? Since you can’t really hide them in a “cat room,” they need to be relatively stylish.
  • Are they safe for your cat? Wall-mounted systems in particular need to be strong and sturdy, hence the higher price tag.
  • If they take up a good chunk of floor space, can they multitask? In other words, be used as a shelf, too?

Aside from #3 below, the trees that fit my criteria were pricier than your average Go Pet Club tree (my favorite brand of “regular” cat trees).

1. CatastrophiCreations Cat Mod Gardens Set Review

CatastrophiCreations Cat Mod Gardens Set Review

CatastrophiCreations makes some incredibly cool wall-mounted cat furniture, but this modular cat tree is my favorite for a small apartment.

Features & Pros

  • The entire thing is hand-crafted, so it’s a truly unique piece.
  • Fabric is removable and washable.
  • Four planters for your cat-friendly plants. It even comes with the pots!
  • The entire thing is modular, so you can arrange it to fit your space.
  • Sisal-wrapped posts give your cat something to scratch.

Cons

  • You’ll need to place it on a wall that gets a good amount of sun if you want to use the planters.
  • You really have to know your walls and where the studs are located.
  • Although it comes with planters, they’re not entirely leak-proof, so you’ll need to choose a plant that doesn’t need a ton of water.

Recommendation

I love everything about this wall-mounted cat tree. It’s looks gorgeous and is diverse enough to give cats a lot of options.

Alas, my house is like a dark cave, so I couldn’t actually grow anything in the planters.

If you are in the same position, check out the other modular systems from CatastrophiCreations.

FYI, they sell almost all of the components separately, so you could build your own system that works better for your needs.

  • Hand-crafted beautiful, large, and sleek design
  • Perfect play structure to bring out the acrobat in your cat
  • Gives cats an outlet for their climbing needs
  • Fabric can be easily removed for washing
  • Add a touch of the wild by adding cat friendly plants

2. The Refined Feline Lotus Cat Tower Review

The Refined Feline Lotus Cat Tower Review

As their brand name implies, the Refined Feline makes upscale products for cats & cat parents.

While they offer a few different cat tree options, the Lotus Tower is by far my favorite.

Features & Pros

  • Beautiful brown Berber carpeting
  • Sisal scratch pad keeps kitties from clawing your furniture.
  • Very stylish and modern, so it looks nice in your home.
  • Includes soft cushions above and inside the cubby.
  • Platforms are large enough for multiple cats, so they’ll accommodate a big breed like the Maine Coon.

Cons

  • The carpeting is attached with Velcro, which eventually will wear out (if you’ve ever had Velcro shoes, you know what I mean).
  • It’s rather challenging to assemble according to some users.
  • Platforms are a little too far apart for senior kitties or munchkin cats.

Recommendation

If you can’t go with a wall-mounted option and want something that looks beautiful in your home, this is a great choice.

It’s simple yet elegant and includes everything you need for your cat: levels to climb, carpet to scratch, and a cubby for hiding.

Based on customer recommendations, I do recommend finding a way to anchor or secure it because it’s a little top-heavy.

That’s not a huge problem with smaller breeds but I can see it being an issue for Maine Coons.

3. K&H Pet Products Hangin’ Cat Condo Review

K&H Pet Products Hangin' Cat Condo Review

If the only extra space you can find is on the back of your door, you’ll love this hanging cat tree!

It’s also the most budget-friendly option at under $100.

Features & Pros

  • Mounts on pretty much any door in your apartment.
  • Cats can access every level from inside the condo.
  • Plenty of little “peek-a-boo” holes so your kitty can keep an eye on you!
  • Made of sturdy waterproof fabric.
  • Folds down when not in use.

Cons

  • Not the most stylish option on this list.
  • Needs to be placed on a door that isn’t against a wall when open (see recommendation for explanation).
  • Some users complain that it has an odd odor to it.

Recommendation

While it’s not my favorite overall, I love the concept and think it’s a great option for those with zero floor space.

Just make sure that you have a door that opens in such a way that there’s no chance of your cat accidentally getting slammed against a wall.

For example, I have a door to my garage that opens into my dining room and never comes in contact with a wall.

K&H Pet Products Hangin' Cat Condo Small Tan 16" x 16" x 65" Cat Furniture
  • FINALLY A cat "tree" that takes less space
  • Mounts on virtually any door
  • SEVEN peep holes for viewing
  • Complete interior access for all levels
  • 600 Denier waterproof fabric
  • Folds down for easy removal and storage

4. Wellucky Wall-Mounted Cat Tree Shelves Review

Wellucky Wall-Mounted Cat Tree Shelves Review

While you’ll definitely need a big budget for the Wellucky, it’s totally worth it if you want something that’s built to last.

Features and Pros

  • Made of real solid wood, which means it will last you a very long time.
  • Sisal material on the poles gives cats a place to scratch.
  • It’s super cute!
  • The entire system is modular, so you can set it up however you want.
  • 100% satisfaction guarantee

Cons

  • The price is the highest on this list and one of the most expensive modular wall-mounted systems that I’ve seen.
  • Solid wood is great, but also heavier, so you have to be really careful about where you place it.
  • Like the other wall-mounted system, you really need to know your walls and where the studs are.

Recommendation

If you have the budget for it and want something that will last a lifetime, this is a fantastic choice.

While it’s a bit more “cute” than what I’d call “stylish,” it’ll still look great in your home!

You could easily make it do double duty by using parts of it as a shelf (no breakables, though!).

Although it’s not Prime-eligible, it does ship free. You just won’t get it in two days.

5. V.JUST Floor to Ceiling Cat Tree Cat Review

V.JUST Floor to Ceiling Cat Tree Cat Review

The a floor-to-ceiling cat tree is absolutely perfect if you only have a few inches of floor space and can’t put holes in your wall.

I’ve seen a few in my research, but I like the V.JUST the best so far.

Features & Pros

  • Takes up just a tiny bit of floor space, yet still gives your cat plenty of climbing opportunities.
  • Covered in soft, non-toxic carpeting for scratching.
  • Stable enough to hold up to 3 cats.
  • Easy to assemble, and tools includes.
  • Comes in two colors, both of which look great.

Cons

  • Designed for a very specific ceiling height ( 232-285 cm)
  • Platforms aren’t wide enough for large cats
  • Only has three platforms

Recommendation

Although I feel like it needs more than three platforms, I like the overall style of this floor-to-ceiling tree better than others I’ve seen.

I would only recommend it for fairly petite kitties though. It’s just not wide enough for a Maine Coon.

Also, make sure you measure your floor to ceiling very carefully since it fits a super specific range.

V.JUST Floor to Ceiling Cat Tree Cat Scratch Post 230-286cm Ajustable High Beige/Blue Wooden Solid Cat Scratcher Pet Playing Fun Tools,Beige
  • ATTENTION: Our cat tree is for indoor height 232-285cm, if your indoor height is beyond the limit, don't buy it please.
  • Space Saving:This cat toy takes up little space, four platforms can hold 1-3 cats playing together, and it's very stable.
  • Material: the cover is in carpet cloth, very soft, and non toxic, WOODEN plates of high density meet the E1 standard.
  • Assembly method: Simple to screw together, assembly instructions and tools included.
  • Boxing: Well packaged, good choice of gift for friends or family members who have cats.

Final Recommendation

Personally, I really love either of the wall-mounted systems!

They make the best cat trees for apartments because they take up no floor space. Plus, you can put them pretty much anywhere.

If you can’t mount things on your wall, though, and of the others would be a great choice.
