Automatic litter boxes are highly debated among the cat owner community. Most of them fail to live up to the lofty expectations.
But the Litter-Robot III [1] doesn’t have this issue with its high-level design. So it’s time to look at what separates itself from these other choices.

1. The Litter Pan’s Bottom Doesn’t Require Scraping
One of the primary reasons for its high-quality performance is the lack of scraping. You see, some automatic litter boxes require cat owners to scrap the bottom. [2]
In most cases, it’s an issue with choices with rake operations. These litter boxes end up building up big clumps of urine, which stick to the litter pan’s bottom.
The litter box’s rake can’t tear apart those big clumps. As a result, cat owners will need to finish the job themselves, defeating these devices’ entire purpose.
But the Litter Robot can remove the task of scraping from my to-do list. It comes from a rotation mechanism, eliminating the clumps after a cat’s bathroom visits.
From there, the clumps don’t have enough time to form and get stuck on the litter pan’s bottom. I should also note that the bottom area consists of thick rubber.
This material will drop down once the machine cycles. Therefore, I can rest easy knowing that anything stuck on the pan’s bottom will release.

Some automatic litter boxes will showcase red blinking lights when its rake gets stuck. Of course, these lights indicate that the litter box has stopped working effectively.
It’s a situation that can quickly become a nightmare. For instance, pet owners on a trip would come home to a mess within their home when this occurs.
But thankfully, I wouldn’t need to worry about this issue with the Litter Robot III. It’s known for never getting stuck or needing a troubleshoot.
The product has such a well-built clean cycle mechanism that its entire system works perfectly. It’s a technological marvel within a marketplace full of duds.
3. There Aren’t Any Special Accessories Required.
One significant issue with automatic litter boxes is the need for multiple unique accessories. For instance, a few options might require special litter or type of litter box cartridges.
But this one keeps things simple. After all, you can “just fill with any brand of clumping litter and let the Litter-Robot do the rest.” [1]
Due to this, it becomes a perfect fit for someone like myself. It leans entirely into my personality as a rather lazy person.

4. You Won’t Have to Clean Stuck Feces on the Walls Anymore.
Nothing is more of a nightmare than cleaning stuck, clumped waste from a litter box’s sides or edges. But these accidents happen whenever a cat manages to do their business and misses.
Unfortunately, this issue occurs with any self-cleaning litter box containing exposed edges.
It even manages to happen at the same rate as traditional litter boxes like a disposable tray.
But the Litter Robot III doesn’t have a design with edges/corners. Instead, the globe design ensures a cat can’t miss during those bathroom visits.
If my cat urinated horizontally or on the globe’s walls, it’d go right onto the rubber. The product’s cycling process and dropping down rubber will ensure it gets to the waste drawer.
In the end, this Litter Robot III contains feces and urine much more effectively. It becomes a life-saver for anyone who owns a feline.

5. No Need to Even The Litter Bed Manually
The Litter Robot III cleaning cycles will even its litter bed automatically. Sadly, most automatic, self-cleaning litter box options with rakes don’t offer this benefit.
In these cases, I would need to spread the litter evenly manually. It’s an issue that arises from four common situations:
- The rack pushed a large amount of litter, creating a pile near the cat waste drawer.
- A cat makes large piles that block a sensor mechanism.
- The product requires a special litter, which needs spreading out
- A litter pile was created behind the rake and needs clearing.
It’s worth mentioning that some people don’t mind spreading out the litter. However, I’m not one of those people, so this benefit becomes crucial for my needs.

Why You Need an Automated Litter Box
So, I’ve now discussed why the Litter Box III is a step ahead of other automatic options. But it does bring up the question of what makes people want these self-cleaning litter boxes?
1. Saves Time and Money
Of course, the initial cost of an automatic kitty litter box is very high. I’ll dive deeper into this issue later within our next section.
But these devices do represent a good value for a cat owner. Auto litter boxes will help save users from dealing with those annoying hassles of a standard litter box.
More importantly, automatic litter systems are designed to be efficient. They ensure users don’t have to throw away clean litter or fresh litter with the used, smelly litter.

The process consists of a mechanism that transforms used litter into ball-like shapes. From there, these balls are effectively removed from the self-cleaning litter box.
Overall, this mechanism can end up saving users hours and money. You can then spend this time doing fun activities rather than cleaning out a litter box.
Meanwhile, lack of odor control [3] from used litter inside disposable litter trays can cause users to throw them away. This issue becomes highly costly over time.
You’ll buy a replacement litter tray after replacement litter tray. But an automatic system offers excellent odor control of used litter. It’s scooped off quickly, saving a lot of cleaning time.
2. Easy to Clean and Use
As I mentioned earlier, cleaning regular litter boxes and trays is time-consuming. But this issue isn’t the only problem as it’s also a rather frustrating and tedious task.
It starts with needing specialized cleaning tools to deal with the mess. These tools become essential when the litter tray is full or changed color.
Furthermore, cleaning out the stuck litter on the tray’s wall will be annoying. It’s pretty uncomfortable, too, as the entire process is disgusting.
I also must mention that doing it the wrong way can lead to an absolute nightmare. The kitty litter will end up spreading all over the place.
But self-cleaning litter box users don’t have to deal with these circumstances. These devices will mitigate the need to scoop out a tray or litter box.
Plus, there won’t be any reason for a brush to clean out litter clumped at the walls or edges. You don’t even need to worry about litter dropping off the machine, either.
Most automatic litter trays eliminate this problem by using inbuilt refillable crystal litter. These components are crucial as the crystals absorb urine and remove odors.
How do they offer these attractive benefits? First, the crystals dehydrate the waste and then leave our houses clean and free of bad odors.
I didn’t even mention that an automatic litter tray only needs changing once a month. Once its water drawer is full, all I have to do is open it and refill the disposable bag.
All in all, it’s a simple process that doesn’t require any effort or thought. It’s a much less frustrating experience than I usually get from regular litter boxes.

3. Helps You Save Litter
Most pet owners have to scoop out solid waste from normal litter boxes every day. Others might be a little luckier and only have to do it once every couple of days.
These processes cause cat waste to sit longer in the litter than necessary. Due to this, more litter is used up as the waste sits in your cat’s litter box.
It’ll then cause what would-be clean litter to get thrown away. But an automatic self-cleaning litter box ensures this doesn’t happen by immediately expelling solid and liquid waste.
As a result, the litter within it will experience less clumping. I couldn’t believe how much money this process saved me on cat litter every month.
4. Ideal for Extended Absences
An automatic litter box would be a perfect fit if I planned to be away for an extended period. It’ll limit the mess that I’d come home to by a significant margin.

It also makes it much easier to find a cat sitter. After all, not everyone is willing to scoop these disgusting waste containers daily like us.
Why You Might Not Want a Self-Cleaning Litter Box
Sadly, automatic cleaning litter boxes aren’t perfect devices. A few notable flaws could make them unsuitable for some feline owners.
1. Expensive Initial Price
As I alluded to earlier, self-cleaning litter boxes are expensive. These products go anywhere from $100 to $400 (such as the Litter Robot III).
So anyone who’s intrigued by these automatic litter boxes will need to save some money. They’ll also have to weigh whether their benefits are worth the excessive price tag.
Moreover, I’d recommend doing serious research into each before picking one. You don’t want to spend a fortune on a frustrating piece of junk.
2. Noisy
Self-cleaning litter boxes have noisy moving parts. Cats aren’t massive fans of unfamiliar noises, leading them to be frightened.
In fact, cats “can become fearful of any sound that it forms a negative association with.” So if the litter box makes a loud sound at night, scaring them, they might avoid it altogether.
3. Some Cats Won’t Like Them.
Cats are known for being picky about their litter areas. Some felines won’t take to an automatic option because of the design or be used to another type of litter box.
After all, cats are “incredibly sensitive to their environment.” It’s not in their nature to understand and accept a new litter box right away.
It’s why I suggest using these devices as a cat’s first litter box. It’ll make them more comfortable with the idea because they don’t know anything else.
